Genealogy
Welcome to all persons with the surname of ALGAZE – or ALGAZI, ALGAZY, ALGAZA, AL GAZE, AL GAZE, ALGAZZE, ALGAZZI, or ALGAZZY, - relatives, friends and the curious! We are here to bring the Algaze Family network online and to celebrate our fascinating history and geneology. We hope to promote involvement in activities like family reunions and to encourage family interaction in general.
We have been told that Algaze is an Arabic name and commonly translated as "fearless warrior". We have also been told that the name was most probably conferred upon our ancestor as a result of brave service in the army of the Moslems, most probably in Medieval Spain. The members of our immediate branch live in Los Angeles, California, Miami, Florida, New Jersey, Long Island, Staten Island, and Brooklyn, New York.
However, we have discovered additional Algazes and Algazis in such far-flung places as Argentina, Cuba, Chile, France, Israel, Istanbul, Sweden, Uruguay, Connecticut, Florida, Kentucky, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Oklahoma, and Texas.
Our ancestors came from Istanbul, Turkey. However, we know of others who came from Izmir, Turkey (Smyrna, Turkey), or even Salonika (Salonica), Greece. In fact, there are even Algazes to be found in the traditional Ashkenazi geographical areas of Poland and Russia.
In Izmir, there is a Synagogue called the “ALGAZI Synagogue.” It is located on Havrah Sokak (Havrah Street). There was a famous Rabbi who served there, Salomon Algazi. His son, Rabbi Isaac Algazi was a world famous singer and Cantor (Hazan) who was born in Izmir, Turkey in 1889 and died in Montevideo, Uruguay in 1950.
We even discovered an Algazi with a 17th Century treasured writings of Rabbi Nissim Shlome Algazi ben Rabbi Avraham Algazi as published in 1692, Turkey, by Yosef Algazi, see images from and descriptions of the book.
So, we welcome you to this page. Please contact us and let us know if you would like to “get connected” to our Algaze family.
With best wishes,
